What is a Mini Facelift?

For patients who have mostly relied on non-surgical anti-aging solutions like fillers and laser therapy in the past, a moment may come when a more dramatic cosmetic intervention is required to combat sagging skin and depleted facial contours. At this juncture, a mini facelift can be an invaluable tool for smoothing the lower face and neck, achieving a more rejuvenated, youthful appearance.

How Does a Mini Facelift Compare to a Full Facelift?

Both a mini facelift and a full facelift can soften and rejuvenate the face.  Patients look more relaxed, refreshed, and youthful. Since aging occurs differently in the young versus older population, there are some key differences between the two procedures, outlined in this chart.

What are the Benefits of a Mini Facelift in Raleigh?

A mini facelift comes with multiple advantages that make it a popular solution among younger patients in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

  • Subtle, natural-looking changes
  • Can accompany liposuction, fat grafting, and chin implant placement
  • Reduced downtime from full facelift
  • Less scar burden
  • Shorter treatment time
  • Cost-effective
  • Boosts self-confidence

Who is a Good Candidate for a Mini Facelift in Raleigh?

A mini facelift is an excellent next step for patients who have tried using non-surgical treatments and topical products but now find that they no longer gain any benefit from these options and may even be referred by their injector. Many patients choose a mini facelift in their 40s – and even in their late 30s – to help stave off signs of aging such as loose skin and fat deposits.

A good candidate for surgery has:

  • Excellent skin quality with no wrinkles
  • Loss of definition and firmness in the lower face
  • A desire for a shorter procedure with less downtime
  • A vision of a natural-looking, nuanced result
  • A clean bill of health
  • Realistic expectations for their results based on their private consultation with Dr. Zenn

What Happens During the Procedure?

Together with Dr. Zenn, you will determine which anesthesia option is right for you. Dr. Zenn and his team will then ensure you are comfortable and relaxed throughout your procedure. To start, small incisions are created around the ears. Through these small, limited openings, the doctor is able to adjust the layers of skin, tissue, and fat, repositioning them for a more youthful presentation, like ironing a sheet. Care and attention is paid to preserving the patient’s facial spontaneity and individuality so that results appear seamless and unforced. Finally, Dr. Zenn will close the incisions using fine sutures. Recovery time is typically shorter than with a full facelift because the surgery less extensive than a full facelift.

Recovery and Downtime After a Mini Facelift

Dr. Zenn and his caring team will support you every step of the way as you heal, following up with you regularly to answer any questions or address any concerns. Here is a rough timeline of what to expect for the first few weeks of recovery.

  • Immediately after surgery – You will need to rest and stay still, keeping the head elevated. Once released, you will need to be driven home by another adult who should assist you for the first 24 hours. Your face will be dressed with a compression bandage that will remain in place for one day.
  • The first few days – This is the time for self-care and relaxation. You will be wearing a facial compression garment 24/7.  Avoid straining, bending, or lifting heavy objects.
  • The first few weeks – Within a week or so, Dr. Zenn will remove your sutures. Dr. Zenn’s will provide scar gel to be placed daily.  At first, the skin may feel tight and numb, but these sensations slowly fade over time. Most patients feel comfortable engaging socially after two weeks.
  • Follow up photos are taken 2 months after surgery.  It is recommended to allow 4 weeks before travel or intense physical activity like running.
